I
always kept hunting dogs and at least
one pet dog all of my adult life until
about 1970 when I decided to take a home
study course in electronics. At that
time I sold or gave all my working dogs
to friends and never replaced the pet
dog when he passed. I was focused on my
business entirely and had no dogs in my
life for 35 years. I have to tell you
coming out to St Frances and adopting
Buck (most of my pets have been Bull
dogs even as a teenager - I just have a
weakness for them!) was one of the best
things I've done since I retired 3 years
ago. It has been a real joy to watch him
slowly regain his confidence and a long
lesson for me in patience.
When Beryl brought Lydia home "Just for
a weekend, blessing of the animals, and
she'll go back Tuesday" I was not very
pleased, I worried about the
responsibility of caring for another dog
etc. but she has turned out great for us
and Buck. He's lost without her and she
has made a wonderful addition to our
family. These dogs have turned us into
the typical pathetic Pawleys area
retired couple, whose life seems to
revolve around taking care of the
animals but I think all retired people
should consider adopting an animal it
helps fill one of the void of leaving
work and also not having any kids in the
house.
