Happy Endings. . .
Micah,
a Labrador mix, is a service dog in
training with Carolina Canines for
Service. Micah came to Carolina Canines
for Service from Saint Frances Animal
Center as an 8 week old pup.
After
passing a multi-part evaluation that
helped to determine his tendency towards
working, Micah joined the Swanner family
where he will live for at least the next
18 months.
Service dogs in training are fostered by
individuals, couples or families with
children. Cornerstone to the service dog
training program, the foster family
agrees to raise and train a dog for up
to 2 years. Foster families attend
regular classes to learn how to train
our dogs and are responsible for
training basic skills which are used as
building blocks for more advanced tasks
when the dog is older. One important
aspect of fostering is the socialization
of the service dog in training. Once the
puppy is approved for socialization, the
foster family takes the dog as many
public places as possible to acclimate
the dog to different situations.
The service dogs in training come from
breeder donations or shelter/rescue
organizations. Carolina Canines for
Service is not a rescue and we do not
have a breeding program. Our ability to
accept a donation of puppies is limited
by the number of foster families
available to help. Foster programs are
ongoing in Myrtle Beach, SC and
Wilmington, NC. For more information
