Happy Endings. . .

Speckles finds a home:
About 2 years ago, our family lost our beloved boxer Bailey. We had her for almost 8 years until she died. We were devastated. We didn't think we wanted another dog for awhile because we grieved so much for her. That lasted about 2 weeks. We are dog people. And for those of you who are too, no explanation is needed. We just were not complete without a dog. Anyway we went on Petfinder and found a cute 6 month old golden retriever mix named Rebel. We traveled over an hour to meet him. He was all we had hoped for and we fell instantly in love with him. While waiting to fill out paperwork on him I sat in the lobby of the shelter. This cute but somewhat shy white lab/hound mix named Speckles walked around and "greeted" people. He was their "greeter" dog. I can't explain it but for me there was this instant connection. If he could of spoken to me he would of said. . "I've been waiting for you". He kept looking at me and my heart just broke for him. I found out that !

He had been there over a year and no one
had taken him home. He was about 2-3 years
old and most people go to shelters to adopt
puppies
not dogs. It was hard to walk away that day but I had already agreed to adopt Rebel and I couldn't take home two dogs.

Well, 2 days later I drove back to pick up Rebel (he had been neutered) and Speckles was still there. I sat and waited for them to bring me our new dog. Speckles just walked over to me and put his head in my lap. I knew then I was a goner. He was coming home with me. My husband was a bit upset for not talking with him first, but that lasted all of 10 minutes. Once he met Speckles he fell in love too.

The story doesn't end there. Thirteen days later we had to have Rebel (who we renamed Cooper) put down due to complications from pneumonia that he caught before he ever went to the shelter. There was nothing we could do to save him. Our family was once again saddened and hurting. But we were so grateful that we had him for the little time that we did. We were able to spoil him and give him love. And the pain was lessened by the fact that we had Speckles. We were able to pour out all of our love and affection on him. He sleeps in our bed, plays with our 3 kids and pretty much lives the good life. And a year ago we got him a boxer mix puppy so he would have a friend. And the best of friends they truly are.

I knew it was meant to be the first time I saw Speck. I feel like he has always been ours even though we didn't get him until he was 2. It just took him a little longer to find us.
